I'm a late-comer to the art world, but for many years I've known what it is that I like and look for in art: beauty. I suppose one of the reasons I got into to this later in life is because I never considered myself an artist. I mistakenly thought that artists are born knowing that they're artists, and that when they do art, they just do it, with no thought required. And, that true artists never need to erase!
I suppose that in addition to looking for beauty in art, I've always thought that art should be pretty easily understood.
